APPLAUSE TO THE MUSICIAN TRAILER – ALICIA SHIRLY, PIANIST, PEDAGOGY EDUCATOR (2019)
Recipient of the 2008 Texas Music Teachers Association Teacher of the Year Award for Outstanding Pre-collegiate Teaching Achievement, Alicia Shirley is an expert pedagogue giving master classes and receiving invitations as a clinician and adjudicator from music institutes and organizations throughout the United States. She has maintained a distinguished private studio since 1990, where her students continue to garner top prizes in competitions throughout the state and country, and perform in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall.
Ms. Shirley served as director of the University of Houston Moores School of Music Intermediate Piano Camp from 1997 to 2017 where she also served on the faculty as a private lesson teacher, ensemble coach and instructor of music history. In addition, she has held faculty positions at San Jacinto College North, the Moores School of Music Preparatory and Continuing Studies program as an instructor of preschool, kindergarten, and first grade music classes, the Texas Music Festival Piano Institute, and most recently the University of Houston Moores School of Music where she was instructor of the undergraduate and graduate piano pedagogy programs from 1999 to 2014.
An active solo and collaborative artist, Ms. Shirley has performed with artists throughout Texas and appeared annually with the Texas Music Festival Orchestra for 16 years. Along with her duo piano partner, Ariane Alexander, she has also performed and given master classes throughout the U. S. including such venues as the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara and the Bravo! String Institute at the University of Minnesota.
Also an active member of several professional associations, including Katy Music Teachers Association, Independent Music Teachers Association, Music Teachers National Association, and Texas Music Teachers Association where she has served on the Board of Directors as chairman of the College Faculty Forum and as the MTNA/TMTA State Performance Competitions chairman. In 1998, as a member of Forum Music Teachers Association, she founded the Houston Forum Young Artists Competition and was the chairman for 10 years.
Ms. Shirley holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Texas Christian University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Houston Moores School of Music, where she studied with Ruth Tomfohrde and renowned pianist Abbey Simon.
