Emma Arizza

Emma Arizza is a communicative performer who wants to engage the audience and make them appreciate classical music if they don’t already.  She’s always rethinking, exploring, and considering new and more creative ways to make music on stage and she loves experimenting with the violin repertoire!

Where she’s from form a very strong part of who she is, her identity as a person but also a musician.  An Italian violinist and this is something she would like the audience to experience and connect to.

“This is my story, I am a young violinist who comes from beautiful Lake Como and I will try to make you experience the Italian Belcanto and the world of opera through my playing. Perhaps if you listen carefully, you can even hear the sound of water or the sunshine rays coming through the hall…” Too ambitious?!

IN WHAT WAYS ARE YOU MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES THROUGH YOUR MUSIC CAREER?

I believe in the power music has on people and society. It lifts our spirit, entertains us and it makes us admire genius composers and compositions from the past. I think that music can be a powerful means to spread beauty. As musicians, of course, we cannot live without music. But I often wonder how it is for other people who do other jobs? The answer I gave myself is that if we imagine taking music away from their lives we can understand the importance of it. People could certainly keep living, but the emotions they get to experience so strongly through music, that sense of greatness when listening to an epic symphony, that sense of joy when hearing a cheerful Mozart aria, or more, that feeling of being understood when they find comfort through music when love and life disappoint them. That is why music is essential to us all. To make us feel part of something greater.

WHAT OBSTACLES HAVE YOU OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

Being a musician is a hard job, but it is also a passion and sometimes it can be really hard to be respected in this field. I have been asked to play for free many times in my life and it is only been a few years since I have realized this is not good. I love doing what I do so much, that I would do it anyway even if not for money, but… I need to eat too! On a more personal level, there were of course obstacles on the way, as there are for any profession that challenges you on a personal level.

WHAT ESSENTIAL LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM SOME OF YOUR MISTAKES?

I sometimes lacked confidence and often I would overwork, not allowing some time for myself. At some point, I have noticed how stopping and thinking made me aware of what I was doing well and what I could have done better in the past.  This was an essential lesson I have learned. Pause and reflect. Living in London has also presented me with many obstacles in the last few years. Moving to a big city implies embracing a frenetic lifestyle that has not always worked for me as a musician. I love being busy and I am lucky I can get so much out of the city, but I do sometimes need my quiet space to get inspiration, from nature, from silence and from…not hearing emails notification sound every 5 minutes!

HOW DOES YOUR MUSIC CAREER USE YOUR SKILLS AND TALENTS?

I have been told I am a very communicative person and people find it easy to talk to me. I have worked on expanding my storytelling skills and developing anything that can better connect me with an audience. I love talking before I play and also give an idea of what I do to my followers on social media and YouTube. During the last year, I have studied new repertoire and engaged in many exciting collaborations.
