Robin Meiksins

She specializes in contemporary music so all her experience and training have helped create connections and trust with composers so she can play their music! She focusses on internet music because she loves YouTube and wanted to share it with a wider audience. Her current project is the Make-up Music series where she works with composers to create music based on her makeup looks!

AT WHAT AGE DID YOU DECIDE THAT YOU WANTED TO BE A MUSICIAN?  WHAT EDUCATION HAVE YOU COMPLETED?

I started studying music in the Cleveland Institute of Music prep division at age 2 in their Dalcroze Eurythmics classes. When I was about 4, I went to a Cleveland Orchestra children’s concert where they had an instrument trial session and I fell in love with flute. There is a writing sample from the 2nd grade where I said I wanted to be a professional flutist when I grew up. CIM would not let me start flute until fourth grade so I then started piano in 1999 and finally flute in 2001.

I continued both instruments through high school and started playing in Contemporary Youth Orchestra, which started my love for new music. At University of Toronto where I did my undergrad, I got a lot of experience in contemporary playing, especially over the summer at Orford Music Festival where I worked alongside the student composers. At Indiana University I focused on contemporary music almost exclusively, playing in the New Music Ensemble and with almost all the student composers.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF TO THE AUDIENCE THAT HAS NEVER HEARD OR SEEN YOU BEFORE?

I am a performer/improviser focused on contemporary collaboration on the internet. I started as an orchestral performer, but I did not really love my sound and the music showed it. When I play new music, I light up and it makes me so happy. Music has been one of the only constants in my life and no matter what I will be involved in it.

WHAT OBSTACLES HAVE YOU OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

Since 2007 I have dealt with three oral tumors which have obviously had a huge impact on my playing. The first one however has helped my sound so much; it opened my air up and helped me find the sound that I know for today. I also really struggled in my masters with listening to my teachers and absorbing lessons and that meant I didn’t get nearly as much time to learn.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I love makeup and try to do a different look every day. I also run social media for an electroacoustic music festival called Splice which is incredibly fun! I work outside of music as a day job right now, so I don’t have a lot of time to do more fun.
